Savannah, Georgia: Intro

If you have never been to Savannah, Georgia, you should go. This city is beautiful. It may or may not have ghosts as well. Take one of their ghost tours to decide for yourself.

Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia. It was established in 1733 on the Savannah River and was the first state capital of Georgia. 1

In this section, we’ll cover 11 hospitals. Several of these hospitals are in South Carolina. CMS lists these hospitals in Savannah, Georgia referral region. This is why they are included in this series.

Much like the city of Savannah, the hospital community has a rich history as well. Candler Hospital is the second oldest hospital in America in continuous operation. It was founded in 1804. It is home to the Nancy N and J.C. Lewis Cancer & Research Center Pavilion, the region’s National Cancer Institute selected cancer center, a national destination for cancer care.2

Candler Hospital became affiliated with St Joseph’s Hospital in 1997. St Joseph’s was founded in 1875 by the Sisters of Mercy. St Joseph’s specializes in cardiovascular care, neurological care, and orthopedics. 3

Memorial Health University Medical Center is much newer in comparison the Candler Hospital as it opened in 1955. It is the regions only Level I trauma hospital and children’s hospital. It is also the Savannah campus of Mercer University School of Medicine. 4
